The effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral therapy for female alcoholics

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the cognitive-behavioral therapy on depression, interpersonal relationship and alcohol abstinence self-efficacy to female patients with alcoholism.
Methods: A nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design was used to perform this study. The study subjects were selected from female alcoholics admitted at K and Y hospital in G City. The researchers assigned each 30 female patients to both experimental and control groups. The cognitive-behavioral therapy were consisted of 10 sessions, developed by Munoz & Miranda(2000) for depression. The data were analyzed by x2-test, Fishers¡¯ exact, paired t-test and unpaired t-test by using the SPSS WIN 20.0.
Results: The intervention group had significantly lower the depression score (t=5.599, p< .001) than the control group. The score of interpersonal relationship (t=4.027, p<.001) and the alcohol abstinence self-efficacy (t=4.353, p<.001) of the intervention group was considerably higher than the control group. As the results of this study, the cognitive-behavioral therapy was effective intervention by increasing interpersonal relationship and alcohol abstinence self-efficacy and reducing the depression in female alcoholic patients.
Conclusion: The cognitive-behavioral therapy considering emotional and interpersonal characteristics should be applied to help the recovery of female alcoholics, In addition. it is necessary to activate as a female-centered cognitive-behavioral therapy in the clinical settings.
